Meet Bratty - your mentally fluffy friend.
Bratty wasn’t like the other bats.
While most bats flapped happily under the moonlight, darting through shadows with squeaks of delight, Bratty clung upside-down in his cozy little cave… refusing to leave.
Not because he was lazy.
Not because he was rude (even though the name Bratty did suit him when he got cranky).
But because—well—Bratty the bat was afraid of the dark.
“Irony much?” snorted a wise old owl who once tried to talk him out of the cave.
“It’s unnatural out there,” Bratty would whisper, wrapping his wings around himself like a blanket. “Too much... black. What if I bump into something? What if I get lost? What if I can't find my way back to my branch?”
His parents tried to reassure him. “But darling, we are the creatures of the night!”
“I vote we change that,” Bratty muttered. “We could be the creatures of dusk. Or brunch.”
The other bats teased him gently at first—until they realized Bratty wasn’t just being silly. His fear was real. So, they tried to help.
One brought him a glow worm. Another gave him a little leaf hat with a shiny pebble stuck on it. But nothing worked until one night, when a storm rolled in, shaking the trees and roaring through the sky.
A baby bird had fallen from its nest.
Without thinking, Bratty zoomed into the night—past the blackness, through the shadows, right into the dark. His heart raced, his wings trembled—but he found the little fluffball and carried it gently back to safety.
“You went into the dark!” his friends squeaked in amazement.
Bratty blinked. “I... guess I did.”
From that night on, he still didn’t love the dark. But he didn’t let it stop him, either. Sometimes he flew with a tiny lantern on a string. Sometimes he made silly shadow puppets to laugh at the shapes that used to scare him.
But most of all, Bratty became known not as the bat who feared the dark…
…but the bat who flew through his fear anyway.
